Mexico’s Highway 1 winds 1000 miles down the Baja California peninsula from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas, the route marked with roadside shrines to victims of its narrow lanes, steep grades and unpredictable obstacles. One of the better known shrines memorializes a young truck driver from La Paz named Hector E. Gastelum Rivera, 24 years old, who died in a wreck just north of the pueblo of Cataviña.
