This is an old song; the oldest version I’ve heard was a “hillbilly” recording from an Edison cylinder from the early 1900s. It’s been covered by many folk and blues players, and over the years verses have accumulated. Rev. Gary Davis was said the have 50 verses for this song.
This song is closely associated with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and Hot Tuna. Their version on the first Hot Tuna album changed my whole concept of acoustic guitar playing.
